Ever since signaller trainings became open to the public on a “regular basis”, the signaller role is the final role that the average player can achieve. In this article I think and explore what other roles SCR could add to make gameplay more interesting, and to distinguish itself from other games in the Roblox Transport Community.
What roles could be potentially added?
I’ve been looking around and managed to narrow it down to two roles that I think have a chance of being added in the future – A maintenance role and a caterer role.
The caterer role would mainly focus on trains that have a buffet/bar. These are the Express HST and the Connect class 68. The role would revolve around this area, with the player having to have to collect meals from here and deliver them to customers. Furthermore, drinks could also be made and served from this area.
There is quite a big issue with the main idea of this role – The lack of NPC passengers. Many people in the SCR community think that the addition of these is way off the table, and I mostly agree with them. Whilst it would be cool for the developers to surprise us like they did with the panto-graphs, I think the amount of optimisation needed for SCR to support passengers like that would be too much work for the developers currently.
In conclusion, the role would require the player to collect and retrieve orders from the bar to give to NPC customers aboard the train. Points would be awarded per customer, and the driver would also gain a small boost for providing a catering position to the player, probably around 3 points per stop.

On the other hand, the maintenance role would be focused fully outdoors, on foot. Players would get callouts, get teleported near the location, or even at the nearest station, and have to get to the location of the call.
The job could feature many tasks, such as repairing signals, station equipment (information boards, lights, ticket machines), cleaning signs, and even track maintenance. These could be local, or, if there’s many people on the role, they could be visible to everyone, so that the team is actually fixing stuff for everyone.
Furthermore, this could actually prove as a player way to solve disruption events! Stuff such as flooding and boat crashes can be handled by this team to get fixed easier and quicker.
How would the trainings function?

Personally, I’ve always wanted the trainings in SCR work in a “Skill tree” way. The main progression of QD, DS, GD, SG would stay, but I think that having options on which way you progress would be interesting! Especially for guards, where they can have something to train for while they wait for signaller applications to open.
What are the chances of these being added?
Honestly… Not big at all. It is a nice thing to theorise about, but with the current rate of development within SCR, it won’t happen soon (Especially the NPC passengers).
However, there is a glimmer of hope. Recent signaller application updates prove that the SCR team is open to updating existing training systems, as the signaller trainings were reportedly rebuilt from the ground up. If this is possible, who’s to say that the same can’t be done for creating new trainings for these roles?
What does the community think?
“The maintenance and caterer idea are great! The caterer though for now is unrealistic, because will SCR ever add AI passengers?”

Most of the community thinks the same about AI/NPC passengers. The developers really have set themselves a reputation for how slowly they work. Hopefully one day they surprise us though!
“i like the idea of maintenance, but i feel caterer would cause too much lag”
-clover.kite
Again, the problem of optimisation comes up. It feels like an extremely hard thing to achieve with SCR, but I feel like hope isn’t lost; after all, they did end up adding a whole new operator recently!
