Lets be honest, the current tram network that we have in the game is not what a real city would have. That’s not saying that I don’t appreciate it though! Personally, I think that adding trams and light rail infrastructure to SCR is a step in the right direction.
It allows SCR to have a wider variety of things to do, with a completely new perspective on the scenery around.
Where do the trams currently go?
The current tram network is very limited, having two exclusive routes and only one branch, consisting of Whitney Green > Berrily.
The 398 tram also possesses battery power, allowing it to travel through areas without overhead power. This proves to be efficient in areas where overhead lines might not look good, such as the Berrily town centre, and also allows for cheaper infrastructure. (In a real world scenario, of course)
The branch that we received in the tram update isn’t even fully light rail. It passes through Greenslade where the Metro tram services mix with the terminating Waterline services before returning back onto the road at Robinson Way.
Why might the developers choose to expand?
Short answer, trams suck right now. Longer answer….
A city wouldn’t build all of this tram infrastructure just for a single route. It just isn’t worth it. Take many UK cities for example, such as Manchester. Their Network serves essentially the whole city and its suburbs – This is something that Stepford is lacking severely in. The only real suburban operator is Waterline, and even they don’t do a perfect job at serving areas near to the city.
Furthermore, it just isn’t enjoyable to drive trams in SCR for long periods of time. The current routes follow the same layout as other Metro routes, and the tram segments are only a small portion of them.
Finally, I think that the developers realise all of these points and obviously they want the player counts to stay high, so logically a tram expansion is on the table in order to keep players active.
Where might the new branches be?
In an ideal world, the new branches would all be connected and they wouldn’t really enter the heavy rail network. However, with the way that SCR updates, it is most likely that we’ll get one branch and then the trams will be quiet update-wise for a while.
As to where these branches could be, I think SCR should take inspiration from real UK tram networks. They don’t just follow an extremely similar pattern to the heavy rail, they actually have unique routes through the city.
If the developers realise this, it is safe to bet that Berrily will have the first new tram branch from the already existing one. Additionally, it will most likely focus on the city, going in between narrow roads and potentially even exploring more suburbs close to Whitney Green.
My prediction is that the next location to receive a tram branch is the junction right after Berrily station. It passes through the city centre, can have easy connections to Whitney Green, an existing tram line, and the road itself leads through the dense city where there currently isn’t anything built.
Personally, I don’t want it to connect directly to Berrily, as this would just add more trams to the heavy rail network. Having it lead from Greenslade instead of Berrily will make people want to drive trams more in the city rather than through the entirety of Stepford, which is what is forced to happen right now due to the lack of tram routes.

This seems like quite a strong idea, the Stepford Bay area already consists of heavy rail infrastructure, and turning it into a tram only line would be a waste of the potential links to other heavy-railed areas. Many people also suggested adding electrification on the line, but I don’t think that that is the correct direction either due to the short nature of the branch and the fact that Metro already operates battery powered trains.

Fully agree with this in my opinion, I didn’t even consider the trams going to other large cities such as Benton!
